Frequently Asked Questions

How old does my baby need to be to start the baby massage course?

The best ages are between 1 month to pre-crawling. They are welcome before and after these ages but you will have to start very slowly with a newborn baby as they cannot usually tolerate too much stimulation to begin with and a crawling baby can be a challenge to keep still.

How does massage help with colic?

The gastro-intestinal system is immature at birth. Massage stimulates the functioning of this system, relaxing the muscles in spasm, and enabling the wind to be expelled. A special colic routine is demonstrated.

What happens if my baby is usually asleep or needs feeding at the time of the class?

Babies’ needs are always met. If your baby is asleep I can provide a doll to practise the strokes on. All strokes are reviewed each week and are easy to learn. Your time practising at home with your baby is the most important.

When should I massage my baby at home?

Babies’ should be massaged when they are quiet and alert, not hungry, asleep or crying. Some parents like to fit it into a bedtime routine either before or after a bath. Some prefer a morning massage.

Every baby is unique!

Do I have to massage in the same order as taught?

No, you can adapt the routine to fit your baby and their needs.

My baby has some eczema. Is it ok to massage him?

Massage can help improve the condition of the skin and relieve stress which can contribute to eczema.

Sunflower oil (which is similar to human sebum) can help dry skin.
